GNOME Translation Team - Māori
As part of the NZ Linux distribution, we are translating the GNOME desktop into Māori. Volunteers are always welcome to add to this effort.
Starting Out
Translating doesn't require any special technical knowledge, just a good understanding of English and Māori. Your team co-ordinator is responsible for attending to the technical details.
The Welsh Translation Team has prepared an excellent localisation guide available at <http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gtp/l10n-guide/>. It explains the different translation tasks and how to edit the .po files we are using.
Translation Resources
The books “Māori for the Office / Te Reo Māori mō te Tari” and “Te Matatiki / Contemporary Māori Words” provide translations for many computer and technical terms. Both are published by Oxford University Press and are available at bookstores throughout New Zealand.
Online, the Ngata Dictionary <http://www.learningmedia.co.nz/ngata/> provided by Learning Media is an excellent resource for more common words.
The Māori status page tracks our overall tranlation status. By clicking on a module name, you can get the latest .po file for editing. After doing some translation work, email it to the nzlinux-maori list to get your translations included.
Although it may be some time before other distributions include the translations, NZ Linux will be updated every month to include the most recent translations. A package with installation instructions will also be provided.
Bugs
If you come across an error in translation, you can file a bug at <http://bugzilla.gnome.org/>. Make sure that your bug is reported against the “l10n” component and contains Māori in the subject.
